INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION TO IMPROVE PHYSIOTHRAPY IN VIETNAM

Purpose:

An entry-level physical therapy educational program at a university in Vietnam and a program of the United States State Department, developed a partnership with the intent of enhancing the university's new bachelor's degree program in rehabilitation.   The specific aims of this project were to:  1) Teach lectures and seminars to rehabilitation students 2) Lead teacher-training programs for faculty instructors on principal topics 3) Evaluate, as part of the curricular assessment team, the curricula, educational materials, and learning activities 4) Conduct workshops for faculty members on academic and professional development topics and 5) Consult with administrators and faculty on curricular programming and faculty development topics related to academic leadership, teaching and learning, assessment, and research 6) Engage in specific educational programs as well as other suitable exercises within the University and associated professional sites.

Methods:

The project took place in Spring 2024 at the Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy in Da Nang, Vietnam.  

Results:

The results of this project are:  1) a course on the evaluation and treatment of patients with respiratory disease was developed and taught to 2nd-year baccalaureate physical therapist students at the Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy 2) a methodology and rubric for student assessment in the clinical environment was developed with faculty 3) a three-day workshop on the best evidence-based practice for the rehabilitation of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and a two-day workshop on heart failure with physical therapists and physicians at Hospital C in Da Nang, including the evaluation and treatment on selected patients 4) a one-day workshop on the interpretation of exercise stress testing with therapists and physicians at Hospital 199 in Da Nang and 4) a two-day continuing medical education course for physical therapists, physicians and nurses on the pathophysiology of pulmonary disease and evaluation and treatment of patients with respiratory disease.

Conclusion(s):

This project shows positive impacts on the development of the physiotherapy workforce in Da Nang, Vietnam.   The collaboration has not only achieved its intended outcomes but has also fostered an environment of learning and exchange among participants. 

Implications:

The design of this project can be replicated in other countries to further develop physiotherapy education.  As Vietnam progresses towards meeting the goals outlined in the Rehab 2030 vision, focusing on workforce development, expanding educational programs, and promoting rehabilitation as an essential health service will be some of the critical steps in addressing the unmet needs within the healthcare system.
