Background: Since 2005 and after various wars in Burundi; needs in physiotherapy and rehabilitation were increasing. There were a lot of injuries due to war wounded patients: fractures, amputations
which needed physiotherapy services to minimize the incapacity. Unfortunately, the human resources were not sufficient in quantity and in quality to answer to the needs. The Centre National de Reference en Kinésithérapie et Réadaptation (CNRKR) was created in 2012 and has started to promote the quality services in physiotherapy and rehabilitation through various activities: Training, development of quality services, good set up of a physiotherapy centre , lobbying for the recognition at the national level of the physiotherapy. It is interesting now to evaluate the impact of the CNRKR in the promotion of the physiotherapy.
Purpose: This study has for objective to show the impact of the activities of the CNRKR in terms of the development of the skills of the physiotherapists but also in terms of the recognition of the Physiotherapy in the country at the national level.
Methods: The study which has been carried out in the CNRKR of Bujumbura is based on the analyse of the data base of the Centre and a qualitative research using a satisfactory questionnaire The elements included in the research are:
· The number of professionals in the services
· The level of the training for the physiotherapists
· The level of the set up of the centre
· The activities developed for recognition of Physiotherapy in the country
· The satisfactions of the patients from CNRKR
Results: Human resources: 11 Burundis physiotherapists with a degree from Benin do work now in Burundi to increase the level of the physiotherapy 1 physiotherapist has been sent to Belgium in order to have Master.
1 Doctor in physical medicine has been appointed for running the CNRKR
Recognition of physiotherapy at the national level: the strategic plan of the ministry of health for the physiotherapy and rehabilitation has been adopted for the year 2011-2015
Level of satisfactions of the patients from CNRKR:
In 2013: 60%, in 2014: 67%, in 2015: 78%
Recognition of a National Centre of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation: The norm of the setting of the CNRKR have been respected in order to be recognized as a National reference centre
Conclusion(s): The results show that the promotion of the physiotherapy develops well. Regarding the training, It is important that the new physiotherapists coming from Benin continue to have a continuous training within the Centres of Rehabilitation of the country in synergy with the actions of Handicap International.
Implications: The presence of new graduated physiotherapists with a degree and the new National Centre provide good conditions to develop in the coming years a degree level school of physiotherapy in Bujumbura for the all region.
