The university is the sole provider of physical therapy education in Nepal. The physical therapy profession in Nepal is struggling to meet a large unmet demand for services, to educate the next generation of physical therapists, and to improve the quality of physical therapy services delivered to local people. The situation has been exacerbated by the increased demand for physical therapy services following the earthquakes in Nepal in 2015.
Nischal Ratna Shakya, President of the Nepal Physiotherapy Association, said: ‘Quality education grounded on skill and expertise can bring a real change in health outcomes of a community. Nepalese people are stoic, but there are so many people here who need physiotherapy to get back to a normal life or manage life as best they can. And we simply don’t have enough physiotherapists to help them.
‘We’ve set a target a of US$2,726,000 to fund the creation of a dedicated building to train and deliver physiotherapy services to people who need help.
‘Our team is dedicated to provide good quality service to people in need and to produce well-trained graduates who will be able to contribute towards better physiotherapy care in Nepal and contribute to improving the health outcomes for local people.’
