World Physiotherapy subgroup activities in 2021

World Physiotherapy has 14 subgroups. They have a specific area of interest, and promote the advancement of physiotherapy and exchange of scientific knowledge in their field. 

Here are activities planned by some of the subgroups due to take place during 2021.

International Acupuncture Association of Physical Therapists (IAAPT)

Webinar series
24 March, 02:00-03:00 UTC. Safe acupuncture and dry needling practice. Speaker: Susan Kohut 

27 May, 02:00-03:00 UTC. Acupuncture during pregnancy: what about the forbidden points. Speaker: Jillian Marie McDowell  

26 July, 19:00-20:00 UTC. Persistent Myofascial Pain and the Gunn IMS (Intramuscular Dry Needling) Approach. Speaker: Lyndal Solomons

15 September, 06:00-07:00 UTC. Cupping Therapy - acupuncture related and fascial mobilisation approaches. Speaker: Kerry Fung

November, date/time TBC. How long, how strong, how often, where and to whom? Applications of sensory stimulation for analgesia and beyond. Speaker: Panos Barlas

International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT)

IFOMPT presents and hosts educational webinars presented by renowned experts from around the world. The purpose of the webinars is to share knowledge and expose members to contemporary research and clinical application. 

The webinars are recorded and are available on a user-pay basis after the live events. More details about the recorded webinars. Previous presenters have included: Chad Cook, Kim Bennell, Gwen Jull, Michelle Sterling, Duncan Reid, Roger Kerry, Louie Puentedura, Jaap van Dieen, Annina Schmid, Laura Finucane, Toby Hall, and Diane Lee.

IFOMPT would like to extend an invitation to the World Physiotherapy family to access these webinars. More details. Upcoming webinars are planned for 2021 and will include speakers such as Josh Cleland, Alison Grimaldi.

International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy (IFSPT)

The IFSPT launched its first annual report at the start of 2021. Using feedback from the report, together with responses to the membership survey that took place in the second half of 2020, the IFSPT board has begun planning a series of initiatives to better address the needs of their membership. 

The IFSPT general meeting will be held on 19 August 2021 via Zoom. This will allow IFSPT to meet the requirements of its by-laws and hold online elections for four positions. More information will be shared with IFSPT members.

A virtual networking session, presented by the IFSPT board, will take place before the general meeting and is designed to enhance communications with IFSPT.

IFSPT will partner with Sport Physiotherapy Organization Canada to deliver a hybrid congress, Breaking Down Barriers. The congress will take place 15-16 October 2021 online and in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. IFSPT president Kristian Thorborg will be a keynote speaker. More details about the congress

The Fourth World Congress of Sports Physical Therapy has been rescheduled and will take place 26-27 August 2022 in Nyborg, Denmark. Details will be shared soon.

International Neurological Physical Therapy Association (INPA)

INPA is holding a global webinar series. Tamine Capato will present the first webinar: Internal and external strategies to alleviate freezing in Parkinson’s disease: a case study. It will take place on 10 March 2021. More details about the webinar

International Organization of Physical Therapy in Mental Health (IOPTMH)

The eighth IOPTMH general meeting will take place on 4 May 2021, and the ninth IOPTMH conference will take place 4-6 May 2022.

International Physical Therapists for HIV-AIDS, Oncology, Hospice and Palliative Care (IPT-HOPE)

Physical therapy and rehabilitation in childhood cancer, global perspectives and learning from the COVID-19 pandemic will be the focus of IPT-HOPE’s online webinar on 22 May, 13:00 UTC.
