Course description
Direct access and patient self-referral are the circumstances where patients/clients are able to access physiotherapy services without having to see another health provider first.
A growing body of evidence suggests that direct access to physiotherapy services is safe and cost-effective for public health systems, especially in primary care and related to musculoskeletal conditions. Early access to physiotherapy services through direct access can reduce the likelihood of acute conditions becoming chronic and leading to disability.
As part of an appropriate practice, physiotherapists should judge the need for referral or discharge if the diagnostic process reveals findings that are not within the scope of the physiotherapist’s knowledge, experience or expertise; refer the client to another appropriate practitioner and facilitate transition from physiotherapy to the care of another professional.
Objectives of the course
For attendees to:
understand the principles of direct access to physiotherapy services
understand the landscape of direct access in the South America region and globally
summarise physiotherapy research on the effectiveness, safety, and efficiency of direct access
apply patient management strategies and appropriately triage patients in a direct access model
learn how to advocate for direct access according to where the professional practices.
